Short answer
A new standard tank water heater typically costs about $600 to $3,100 installed for 40 to 50 gallons, a tankless unit about $1,400 to $5,600 and a hybrid heat pump heater about $2,000 to $4,600, based on HomeGuide's published national ranges. How does the estimate work?
The calculator starts from installed-cost ranges published in HomeGuide's water heater installation cost guide. That guide puts a 30-gallon tank at about $500 to $1,900 installed, a 40-gallon at $600 to $3,000, a 50-gallon at $700 to $3,100, a 65-gallon at $900 to $3,400, a 75-gallon at $1,100 to $3,600 and an 80-gallon at $1,200 to $4,000. Tankless units run about $1,400 to $5,600, and hybrid heat pump heaters about $2,000 to $4,600.
| Water heater type | Typical installed cost |
|---|---|
| 30-gallon tank | $500 to $1,900 |
| 40-gallon tank | $600 to $3,000 |
| 50-gallon tank | $700 to $3,100 |
| 65-gallon tank | $900 to $3,400 |
| 75-gallon tank | $1,100 to $3,600 |
| 80-gallon tank | $1,200 to $4,000 |
| Tankless | $1,400 to $5,600 |
| Hybrid heat pump | $2,000 to $4,600 |
On top of those national ranges, we add our own planning assumptions for things that commonly change the price in Arizona homes: gas venting and connections, interior closet or attic locations, switching types or fuels, an expansion tank and code updates, and haul-away of the old unit. Those adders are clearly our assumptions, not published figures, and your real price depends on the unit you choose, permits and what the plumber finds on site.

Call (857) 201-2772Why do Arizona water heaters fail early?
Hard water is the main reason. Scale collects at the bottom of gas tanks and on electric elements, making the heater work harder and louder until the tank corrodes through. In the low desert, garages reach well over 100 degrees in summer. In Flagstaff and Prescott, freezing garages and very cold incoming water add strain. Flushing once a year, checking the anode rod and softening the water all extend heater life.
Tank, tankless or hybrid?
- Standard tank: lowest upfront cost and simple to replace like for like. Size it to your household (40 to 50 gallons for many families).
- Tankless: endless hot water and space savings, but often needs a larger gas line, new venting and yearly descaling in hard-water areas. See tankless water heaters.
- Hybrid heat pump: high efficiency for electric homes. It needs room, airflow and a condensate drain, and it works well in warm Arizona garages.
When is it time to replace a water heater?
- Water at the base of the tank
- Rusty hot water
- Loud popping or rumbling
- Tank older than about 10 years
- Repeated repairs

Frequently asked questions
Is this a quote?
No. It is an estimate based on published national ranges plus our planning assumptions. Call (857) 201-2772 for an exact quote.
Why is the range so wide?
Brand, capacity, venting, permits, access and code updates all vary. A phone call narrows it fast.
How much does a tankless water heater cost?
HomeGuide's national range is about $1,400 to $5,600 installed. Gas line upsizing and new venting push it toward the top.
How long does a water heater last in Arizona?
Often less than the 10 to 15 years quoted nationally, because hard water builds scale. Yearly flushing and a softener help.
